it actually IS an exploitation of culture; granted that its being used to encourage people to be healthy, however, using the term “hula” and making people pay money for it to people who are being “certified” to use intellectual property of native people to address the inefficiencies of the American diet & culture, is the exploitation that many kanaka practitioners will see; sharing is caring, selling is exploiting.

@Colt0410 Well said and I totally agree! I dunno why people say this is rippin of culture as u say culture is about sharing and that’s what they do, while having a great exercise and having fun while at it! I’d love to join, a shame it’s to far away from Norway! And as u said, it’s not a Heiva or a Fete, so no need to judge on details!

@dtulua: I too agree with you and you comments. “the tradition of dance used as an exercise program is NOT exploiting our culture but sharing our cultures.”

I love this class. I’m Hawaiian, have danced in a hula halau, and with a Tahitian group for years, and I don’t see why people get so offended by it. People are doing it to work out, not to enter Heiva or Merrie Monarch. And Anna has an awesome body. She must be doing something right, because I know some great Tahitian dancers, who aren’t in the best of shape. I wouldn’t want a Latino knocking on me for doing Zumba, so I’m not gonna knock on someone else doing Hot Hula.

@dtulua Well said…well said. Don’t knock it till you try it “negative commenters”. It’s not a halau or a mockery. It’s a fitness program to encourage health and inspire those to lose weight.

ulumau: exploiting? with the health issues plaguing our people, the tradition of dance used as an exercise program is NOT exploiting our culture but sharing our cultures. she’s a blessing to our people as well as the fitness industry. Quit acting like the “victim” and get over yourself. the longer we remain mysterious to other people the greater the chances of us being portrayed as savages, gang bangers, etc. on the big screen. The Rock and Polumalu are the only recognizable Polynesian faces th
